KANSAS CITY – The Evangel baseball team split a Heart of America Athletic Conference double-header Saturday at Avila taking game one, 7-4, before falling 11-10 in game two at the Zarda Multisport Complex.

Evangel rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning before adding four more runs in the top of the seventh. The runs proved needed insurance for the Crusaders, as Avila added two in the bottom of the seventh before reliever Brad Potts shut the door on the Eagles.

Starter Dustin Eby picked up his sixth win of the season and third straight to improve to 6-3. Eby walked just two and struck out seven after scattering 13 hits over six innings. Potts entered in the seventh as he struck out two while earning the save.

Tanner McVey homered for Evangel leading the way with three RBIs. Jordan Yates also doubled and finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the win.

A big first inning nearly proved too much for Evangel to overcome falling behind 7-3 after the first. However, the Crusaders rallied for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull within 10-9. Avila would answer in the sixth inning as Evangel managed another run in the top of the seventh but came up just short falling 11-10.

McVey homered in game two as well going 1-for-4, while Blake McCarty finished 2-for-3 with a RBI. Austin Alfrey, Stevin Cisneros and Ryan Frye each tallied two RBIs in the loss.

Evangel continues its April road swing next weekend at 10th-ranked Central Methodist. First pitch Friday and Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
