FAYETTE, Mo. – A pair of late-inning rallies came up just short Friday evening as the Evangel baseball team fell, 7-6 and 8-6 at 10th-ranked Central Methodist in Heart action.
The Crusaders and Eagles went back and forth in both games as the first game saw five home runs including three from Evangel. Central Methodist came back to take a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning and managed to hold off another Evangel rally in the sixth.
Evangel would take advantage of two hits and an error in the top sixth on a RBI double from Jose Vargas. Vargas finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run in the loss; however, the Eagles went to the bullpen and held on for the one-run win.
Dustin Hargus also recorded multiple hits going 3-for-4 with a RBI and a home run while Stevin Cisneros finished with 1-for-4 adding a home run as well.
Both starters went five innings as Dustin Eby scattered nine hits but was charged with six of the seven runs. Caleb Pierce pitched one inning of relief allowing just two hits and no runs.
Both offenses continued to stay hot in the second game led by a home run from Tanner McVey and a triple from Ryan Frye. Vargas again tallied two hits and two RBIs, with teammate Blake McCarty finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs as well.
Brad Potts earned a no-decision as he pitched just 3.2 innings and allowed five runs. However, only three of those runs were earned as Central Methodist took advantage of two Crusader errors. Josh Lachnit pitched two innings of relief allowing three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the loss.
Evangel and Central Methodist finish a four-game series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
