SPRINGFIELD – The Evangel Crusader baseball team extended its school record winning streak to 14 consecutive games with a 3-1 win before seeing the streak snapped in game two, 5-3, Friday against Mount Mercy.

The Heart of America Athletic Conference opener for both teams saw the Crusaders get another solid pitching performance from starter Derek Kennell. The win for Evangel improved its school record to 14 consecutive victories before seeing the streak snapped in game two.

The junior scattered five hits and allowed just one coming in the seventh inning from the Mustangs.

Kennell threw six scoreless innings before Mount Mercy scored its only run in its final at bat. He struck out three while needing just over 100 pitches for his fourth win of the season.

Both teams were held scoreless until Evangel got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Crusaders added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as they were held to just three hits.

Austin Alfrey and Tanner McVey earned the only RBI for Evangel as Alfrey finished 1-for-3.

Game two saw both teams battle back and forth with an early lead from Mount Mercy in the top of the first. The Mustangs scored two runs before Evangel answered with three runs in the bottom of the second frame.

After three scoreless innings, Mount Mercy broke the game open with three runs in the sixth, as the Mustang bullpen held Evangel scoreless over the final five innings to snap the Crusader win streak.

Evangel continues its homestand Monday afternoon with a double-header against No. 11 Clarke. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
