MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Solid pitching helped the Evangel Baseball team to a series sweep Saturday at Bacone winning 16-1 and 1-0 in non-conference road action.
In game one starter Dustin Eby won his second straight game after allowing just two hits in five innings. Eby struck out 10 and walked none to help silence the Warriors' bats.
Offensively Evangel scored 16 runs behind 12 hits and also took advantage of seven Bacone errors. Kyle Thurman, Jordan Yates, and Tanner McVey all homered for the Crusaders while Yates finished 2-for-4 with a double as well.
Thurman tallied four RBIs as he also had multiple hits going 2-for-5.
Evangel struck early with two runs in the top of the first inning, however, a 10-run second inning put the game way out of reach early. The Crusaders would add three more runs in the top of the third and another in the fifth as Bacone's only run came in the bottom of the sixth.
The final game of the series saw a pitching duel between Tanner McVey and Kyler Johnston of Bacone. McVey held the Warriors to just two base runners in the game, both coming on base hits as the junior also struck out seven and walked none.
The only run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning when Jose Vargas walked with two outs. After a stolen base by Vargas, and an error by the Warriors, Calab Kauffman would drive home the Evangel shortstop for the eventual game-winning run.
Evangel returns to Springfield starting a four-game weekend series against McPherson College (Kan.) on Friday. The two teams will play a double-header both Friday and Saturday starting at noon.
