SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team split a non-conference double-header, 5-3 and 6-4 against Kansas Wesleyan Friday afternoon.
Evangel jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Patrick Gaul hit a leadoff home run. The inning continued with back-to-back singles from Dustin Hargus and Dylan Bradshaw.
Both pitchers would settle in before Kansas Wesleyan got on the board in the fourth inning with three runs. However, the Crusaders added an insurance run in the sixth inning before Ben Loge came in for his second consecutive save.
Starter Dustin Eby scattered four hits through six innings as he struck out five and walked three.
Both teams managed to take advantage of the others' errors with Kansas Wesleyan taking a 7-4 win.
The Coyotes got on the board in the second with a run before tallying a four-run third inning.
Evangel rallied in the sixth with four runs to pull within 6-4, but KWU added a run in the seventh and shut the door on the Crusaders in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
Evangel makes a quick trip to Oklahoma Tuesday to face Bacone College in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
