SEWARD, Neb. – A last-minute comeback fell short Saturday night as the Evangel men's basketball team fell, 75-69, to host Concordia at the 18th Annual Cattle Classic.
The Crusaders led at halftime 39-36, but the Bulldogs stormed out of the locker room using a 12-0 run to open the half. Concordia was never able to fully pull away as it built a 10-point lead with 15:22 left in the game.
Evangel managed to chip away as Justin Washington hit a baseline jumper with 3:39 left to pull the Crusaders within three points, 68-65. Washington scored a game-high 20 points in the loss as he earned a double-double with 11 boards.
A Jalen Norman free throw pulled Evangel within two, 69-71 with 28 seconds left in the game. However, the Bulldogs made four free throws in the final 10 seconds to hold off the Crusaders for the win.
After being outrebounded on Friday night, Evangel was even with Concordia, but rather free throw shooting for the second night where the Crusaders struggled. Evangel shot just 46 percent on 7-of-15 from the stripe as Concordia finished 66 percent on 18-of-27 shooting.
Evangel heads south on Highway 65 next Tuesday in the first meeting of the Rib Crib Highway 65 Shootout at College of the Ozarks. Tipoff from Point Lookout is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
