SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A last-second attempt was knocked away as the Evangel men's basketball team fell to Southwestern Assemblies of God University 80-78 in the Fourth Annual Assemblies of God Classic Friday evening.

The Crusaders led by as many as six in the first half taking a 51-45 lead into the locker room. SAGU rallied back to lead most of the second half before Evangel regained the lead 78-77 with five seconds left.

After Dylan Bekemeier drove, the lane to give the Crusaders the lead a jumper with 14 seconds left gave the Lions back the lead. A free throw with three seconds would give SAGU the two-point advantage as Bekemeier would be denied the basket with five seconds left sealing the win for the visitors.

Justin Washington led Evangel with a double-double before fouling out with 25 points and 13 boards. The freshman nearly reached a double-double before halftime with 19 points and 9 boards. Joining Washington in double figures, Braden Adams and Luke Call each finished with 15 points as Jalen Norman added six points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.

Evangel had trouble getting to the foul line shooting 55 percent on just 5-of-9 shooting. SAGU managed to finish 13-of-21 at the free throw line as nearly every other statistic was even for both teams.

The Lions were led by Cameron Hill who finished with 18 points as Jalen Petillo posted a double-double as well. Petillo finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead five Lions in double figures.

Evangel closes out the Fourth Annual Assemblies of God Classic Saturday evening against No. 22 Vanguard. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. following No. 1 Cornerstone (Mich.) and SAGU at 3 p.m.
