Josh Evans & Sydnee Garrett Named Inaugural Male & Female Athletes of the Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Evangel University senior Josh Evans, and junior, Sydnee Garrett, were named the inaugural winners of the Dr. David Stair and Sandra Sorbo Male and Female Athletes of the Year on Monday.

Dr. Stair and Sandra Sorbo are former Directors of Athletics who were advocates for all student-athletes and expected excellence from all who participated wearing the Evangel uniform.  They had great respect for those who worked hard, were exceptional performers and those that exemplified great integrity and sportsmanship.

The two student-athletes will be honored during Hall of Fame Weekend, October 12-13, as part of ceremonies for the 2018 Hall of Fame Class.

Senior Josh Evans, completed his football career earning All-American honors at defensive end. He set the career and single-season record for tackles for a loss. His 31.5 sacks are second on the all-time list as he was named 2017 Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time first team all-conference selection.

He dominated on the field finishing the season ranked second in NAIA in sacks and fourth in tackles for a loss. Evans was also a two-time Cliff Harris Award Finalist, an award given to the top small college defensive player in the nation.

During his four-year career that began as a walk-on, Evans spent time as a volunteer at the Springfield Boys and Girls Club. He has also served as a volunteer football coach and weight training at his former high school, Pleasant Hope along with various volunteer roles at Pleasant Hope Middle School.

Earning the Female Athlete of the Year honor, junior Sydnee Garrett completed an All-American season in women's basketball. Garrett managed to record one of the best individual seasons in recent history leading the conference in scoring and finishing second in rebounding.

She earned first team all-conference honors as her 552 points ranked 16th most in a single-season in Evangel history after averaging 19 points per game. Her 261 rebounds also ranked 19th most in a single-season.

Off the court, Garrett volunteered with her team at the Springfield Miracle League along with spending time at Weller Elementary. She helped pass out Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas dinners at Watkins Elementary in Springfield.
