Phillip Dowden Named Heart Sports Information Director of the Year

OLATHE, Kan. – The Heart of America Athletic Conference announced its 2017-18 awards and Evangel University Assistant Athletic Director, Phillip Dowden was named the Dave Fillmore Sports Information Director of the Year.

The award is named after the first SID at Evangel University in 1977, as well as the league's sports information director from 1988-2003. Fillmore passed away on December 21, 2008, but not before being inducted into the Evangel Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007. He also won the Clarence "Ike" Pearson Award in 1999, the highest honor bestowed upon sports information directors in the NAIA.

Dowden was honored in voting by conference sports information directors and is the first Evangel SID to win the award named after the school's first sports information director.

"I am incredibly humbled to receive this honor," Dowden said. "The Heart is the best conference in the NAIA and our sports information directors and athletic administrators are all some of the best. To be recognized in this group is a great honor."

Dowden started at Evangel prior to the 2016-17 academic year and in his second year helped Evangel reach a number of new heights starting with a website redesign before the 2017-18 year. He oversees the media relations efforts for all 14 varsity sports, social media, broadcasting, and promotional efforts of the Crusaders.

In addition to his work in the athletic department, Dowden played a vital role in bringing the Heart Baseball and Softball Postseason Tournaments to Ozark and Springfield. He organized both tournaments and continued working with the Springfield Sports Commission to bring the 2019-2020 NAIA Softball World Series to Springfield.

Away from the athletic department, he also plays a role around the Evangel campus serving on the Evangel Homecoming Committee.

A 2008 graduate of Missouri Southern, Dowden has worked at every level of college athletics. Before arriving at Evangel, he was the Director of Athletic Media Relations at NCAA Division I Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Dowden will represent the conference in the voting for the NAIA SID of the Year, an award that will be announced in the fall of 2018.
