Baseball Blasts Missouri Valley in Double-Header Sweep

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team finished off a pair of impressive wins Sunday with a 6-3 victory in game one and a 13-5 win in game two over Missouri Valley.

The Crusaders swept the Vikings after recording seven hits in game one and 13 hits in game two.

Ryan Frye led the Crusaders going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a triple after taking a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Evangel added four runs on three hits and an error to break the game open in the bottom of the third inning.

Starter Derek Kennell was impressive through the first six innings allowing just two hits and one run. Kennell earned the win as he also struck out four before senior Deric Link finished off the seventh inning with two strikeouts of his own.

In game two, the Crusaders scored early and often.

Evangel opened up the first inning with a 5-0 lead and added another in the second inning before the Vikings scored in the top of the third to make it 6-1. The Crusaders would answer with three more runs in the third before putting the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning.

Jordan Kirkpatrick doubled to start the fifth inning and later scored as Tanner McVey paced the offense going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Austin Alfrey also recorded multiple hits and a pair of RBIs.

The extra base hits continued in the later innings as Austin Tebo and Dustin Hargus doubled before senior Josh Lachnit pinch hit. Lachnit earned his first career RBI scoring McVey.

Taylor Wood earned the win as he scattered five hits over the first five innings while walking none and striking out four. Nathan Cuellar and Caleb Pierce finished the game with an inning each in relief.

With the sweep, Evangel keeps pace in the South Division standings in fifth place just two games behind Avila in fourth.

Evangel and Missouri Valley finish their series Monday in the final home game of the regular season for the Crusaders. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
