OZARK, Mo. – Offense was in full force in the opening game of the 2017 Heart Baseball Tournament as Culver-Stockton knocked off Evangel 14-13 in the first round.

The Crusaders end their season at 27-24 as the Wildcats move onto the eight-team double elimination tournament.

Both teams combined for 30 hits and 27 runs as Culver-Stockton took a 10-8 lead into the ninth inning. The Wildcats added four more runs in the top half of the inning but Evangel would push CSC in the bottom of the ninth.

Blake McCarty reached on an error to start the inning before a two-RBI single from Kyle Thurman pulled Evangel within 10-14. A walk to Austin Alfrey allowed Stevin Cisneros to double home Thurman for his third hit of the day. Cisneros finished 3-for-6 with two runs and a RBI in the loss.

Tanner McVey singled home both Alfrey and Cisneros before the final out ended the season for the Crusaders. McVey finished 3-for-5 on the season with two runs and a pair of RBIs.

Dustin Eby threw the first three innings and was tabbed with the loss before Taylor Wood pitched 3.2 innings of solid relief. Wood allowed just three hits before Josh Lachnit finished the final 2.1 innings for Evangel.

Luis Vlichez earned the win as he struck out five and walked just two. Tyler Smith pitched the final inning to earn the save for Culver-Stockton.
