Evangel Baseball Drops Season-Opening Double-Header at Texas A&M-Texarkana

TEXARKANA, Texas – The Evangel baseball team dropped its season opener Friday afternoon, 8-0, and 8-3, at Texas A&M-Texarkana in non-conference action.

Game One

The Crusaders struggled to get their bats going in Friday's season opener. Texas A&M-Texarkana limited Evangel to just two hits in an 8-0 shutout.

Starter Dustin Eby allowed just three hits in four innings and was charged with just one run after striking out four. Tyler Collinson followed Eby holding the Eagles to just one hit that added two sixth-inning runs.

The Eagles jumped out in front 2-0 in the third but pulled away in the fourth inning capitalizing on a pair of lead-off walks. A&M-Texarkana got a 2-out double to score the final three runs on the inning, but the damage was already done giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

Jose Vargas and Camden Burns recorded the only hits for Evangel in game one.

Game Two

The second game was more offense from Evangel, however, A&M-Texarkana managed to score runs in every inning but the first and fifth.

Dustin Hargus, Dylan Bradshaw, and Camden Burns all recorded multiple hits for Evangel as Burns and Bradshaw each tallied extra-base hits. Hargus picked up his first RBI of the season on a shallow single to score Patrick Gaul in the first inning.

The Crusaders only other run came in the fourth when Bradshaw doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Burns double with one out. The backend of the Eagles' bullpen held Evangel scoreless and allowed just two hits.

Derek Kennell scattered 11 hits in a complete game loss striking out two and walking four. Kennell who led Evangel with seven complete games and in ERA last season went the full seven innings on Friday.
