BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Evangel baseball team split the final two games of its opening series, 2-1 and 10-9, Saturday at Texas A&M-Texarkana.
Evangel got an outstanding pitching performance from Bret Hoffman in game one allowing just two hits in a complete game win. Hoffman walked three and struck out two, as the only run for the Eagles was unearned.
The Crusaders got the eventual game-winning run in the sixth as Hargus reached on an infield single with one out. After a single by Ryan Frye, Hargus moved to third on an error by the Eagles and scored one batter later. Dylan Bradshaw picked up the RBI on a ground ball to the right side scoring Hargus.
Texas A&M-Texarkana added a run in the bottom of the seventh but left the bases loaded as Hoffman finished the win with a strikeout.
The second game saw both offenses come alive with a combined 17 hits by both teams.
Evangel took an early lead in the third inning, but a seven-run bottom half of the inning put the Eagles back on top. The Crusaders would add runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth and seventh innings, but Texas A&M-Texarkana managed to push single runs across in the fourth, fifth and sixth as well.
Ryan Frye finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs to pace the offense.
Four pitchers saw action in the finale as Austin Dill tossed 2.2 innings after getting the start.
Evangel makes its home debut Thursday in a double-header against Bacone College. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
