SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Solid pitching saw the Evangel baseball team earn a split Monday, 8-2 and 5-1, against Peru State in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

Game One
The Evangel baseball team jumped out to an early lead in game one, as Dustin Eby limited the Peru State bats in an 8-2 win.

The Crusaders scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and three more runs in the bottom of the second to stake an early lead. Tanner McVey, Gabe Franklin, and Jose Vargas all finished with two hits while McVey added a pair of RBIs.

Eby earned a complete game win as he scattered six hits and allowed just the two runs. The senior struck out six and walked just one for his third victory of the season.

Game Two
The second game saw an impressive pitching performance from both starters as Carlos Gonzalez of Peru State was able to outduel Mason Baur of Evangel.

Gonzalez went the distance allowing six hits and just one run while striking out nine. The left-hander managed to work around four walks and strand 10 Crusaders on the bases.

Baur pitched four innings before Ben Loge and Colin Irvine came on in relief for the final three innings. Baur walked one and struck out three as Loge and Irvine combined for four strikeouts.

Jose Vargas tallied the only hit for Evangel through the first four innings before McVey and Dustin Hargus singled in the fifth inning. However, the Crusader left two runners on before scoring their only run in the sixth inning.

A lead-off double from Gabe Franklin was followed by a double from Vargas in the sixth for his second hit of the game. However, Vargas was thrown stretching the double at third as the rally ended for Evangel.
