ATCHISON, Kan. – The Evangel baseball team dropped the series opening games at Benedictine Friday falling 21-9 and 11-6 in Heart South Division action.
A back and forth game through the first four innings saw Benedictine pull away with 15 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat Evangel 21-9.
Derek Kennell scattered seven hits through 3.2 innings as the Ravens took a 4-3 lead. After two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Crusaders pulled ahead with a 7-6 advantage in the top of the fifth inning.
However, Benedictine responded in the fifth and sixth to break the game open. Both teams combined for 28 hits and 30 runs, but the Ravens' bullpen held Evangel to just two hits over the final two innings.
Dustin Hargus was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run while Dylan Bradshaw was 2-for-4 as well with a triple. Tanner McVey led Evangel going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the loss.
The second game saw Benedictine post an early 7-0 lead before Evangel started its rally. The Crusaders pulled within 7-4 entering the bottom of the fourth inning when the Raven bats picked back up.
Both teams pounded 13 hits apiece as Tanner McVey finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a home run, and a double. Evangel threatened in the top of the seventh but left the bases loaded to finish with eight runners left on during the game.
Bret Hoffman pitched a complete game as he was charged with eight of the 11 runs. Hoffman struck out two and walked three in the loss.
Evangel and Benedictine wrap up a four-game series on Saturday with first pitch at 1 p.m.
