Evangel Baseball Shuts Down No. 22 Central Methodist in Series Opening Split

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team knocked off No. 22 Central Methodist Friday with a 5-2 win in game one before a 13-4 setback in the second game of the Heart South Division double-header.

Game One
Evangel starter Derek Kennell went six strong innings allowing just five hits and striking out five to improve to 8-3. Tanner McVey entered to pitch the seventh and picked up his league-leading ninth save of the season.

The Crusaders answered Central Methodist in the first inning to take a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the second inning.

Gabe Franklin led-off with a single and moved the second on a sac bunt. Harrison Stevens belted an RBI triple into the gap in right and scored himself on an error by the Eagles.

Evangel would add a run in the fourth and another run in the bottom of the sixth when Jose Vargas tripled to lead off the inning. Three batters later Patrick Gaul singled home Vargas to give Evangel the 5-2 lead. Gaul finished 2-for-3 with an RBI while Stevens was also 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Game Two
Evangel dropped game two behind a pair of big innings from Central Methodist. The Eagles scored six runs in the second and seven more runs in the fifth inning.

The fifth inning saw a pair of home runs from CMU as Evangel rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Gabe Franklin led Evangel going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.

Evangel used five pitchers in the loss as Ben Loge entered in the second inning behind Bret Hoffman. Colin Irvine and Kellan Maxwell pitched hitless sixth and seventh innings out of the bullpen.

Evangel finishes the series on Saturday with Senior Day against Central Methodist in the regular season finale for both teams. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m. The win over a ranked opponent is sponsored by St. George's Donuts.
