Timely Hitting Leads Baseball to 4-1 Win over MidAmerica Nazarene in 1st Round

OZARK, Mo. – A solo home run from Tanner McVey broke a scoreless game in the fourth inning as Evangel baseball rode solid pitching from Derek Kennell for a 4-1 win over MidAmerica Nazarene Friday evening in the first round of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament. 

Kennell scattered five hits through the first five innings as he picked up his ninth win of the season. The senior allowed one unearned run and struck out four before McVey entered with a runner on in the eighth inning.

McVey picked up his 11th save as he struck out a pair including the final out of the game to go along with his home run.

Evangel added another run in the fifth inning when Patrick Gaul led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. The next batter, Jordan Yates, pushed an RBI groundout to the right side to score Gaul giving the Crusaders a 3-0 advantage.

The Crusaders manufactured another run in the seventh after Ryan Frye led off with a single and scored on another RBI from Yates. Frye finished 3-for-3 with an RBI while Yates was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the win.

MNU starter Jacob Sylvester went 6.1 innings allowing nine hits and all four runs while striking out seven. The Pioneers left 10 on base as Evangel out-hit MNU 11-9.
