SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team split a doubleheader with Crowley's Ridge College on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 5-1 and dropping the second game 4-3.
The Crusader got timely hits in game one behind a dominant performances on the mound. In game two, the Crusaders found themselves down and were able to battle back to tie the game and force extra innings, but were never able to close out the game.
The first game saw the Evangel bats strike early, with the Crusaders scoring two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third.
Jordan Yates got things started in the second inning when he led off with a double. He was moved over to third after a groundout, and came home off a Harold Alvarez single. Alvarez eventually scored when he stole home.
The third inning scoring started with a one-out double by Jose Vargas. Following him, was a RBI double by Yates. Yates eventually scored when he stole home. The final run of the inning was courtesy of a Noah Suiter single to right that scored Preston Allmand.
Mason Baur was dominate on the mound, striking out 10, walking four, and allowing only one hit in five innings of work. Tyler Collison closed out the game with two strikeouts, a walk, a hit, and run allowed in two innings.
The game went quickly through the first three innings and then the Pioneers scored twice in the top of the fourth to take the lead. The Crusaders were able to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth after Camden Burns doubled and Patrick Gaul hit an RBI single.
The Pioneers would get the run back, however, in the top of the sixth to extend the lead back to two. The Crusaders didn't quit though, scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth (Yates RBI double) and seventh (Harrison Stevens RBI double) innings to tie the game and force extra innings. Unfortunately, the Pioneers would retake the lead for good in the top of the ninth.
Ben Loge pitched six innings in the loss, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out eight. Camden Burns pitched two innings in relief, striking out one and giving up four hits. Zach Johnston pitched one inning of relief, striking out one and giving up the game-winning run.
Evangel next plays on Saturday, Feb. 15 when they host St. Ambrose for a doubleheader starting at noon.
