SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team continued its hot hitting and solid pitching Friday sweeping Texas A&M-Texarkana 8-3 in game one and posting a 4-0 shutout in game two.
Evangel out-hit Texarkana 13-6 with four of the top four hitters in the order combining for 10 of the hits.
Jose Vargas and Mason Baur led the way with three hits each, as Vargas added a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Pat Gaul continued to swing a hot bat in the lead-off with a pair of hits and two runs while Harrison Stevens added two hits.
Mason Baur earned a no-decision going 2.1 innings and scattering five hits before Zach Johnston came on with one out in the third inning. Johnston struck out four and allowed just one hit over the final 4.2 innings to earn his first win of the year.
In game two, starter Ben Loge earned his first victory of the year as the senior went 6.1 innings and struck out five. Loge allowed five hits but managed to work out of jams in the third and fifth innings to earn the shutout.
The Crusaders extended the lead 3-0 in the third inning on a Pat Gaul home run to lead off the inning. An insurance run would come for Evangel in sixth on an RBI single from Harrison Stevens to score Noah Suiter who led off the inning with a base hit.
Stevens finished 3 for 4 as Gaul also added a pair of hits in the second game for Evangel.
Evangel is scheduled to host College of the Ozarks on Tuesday at Crusader Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
