SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Evangel baseball team picked up an exciting walk-off win Saturday, 5-4, in game one before falling to Mount Mercy 7-4 in the second game of a Heart of America double-header.
After falling behind 4-0, Evangel battled back to pull within a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, 4-3.
The excitement for the Crusaders would build two innings later when Evangel earned a walk-off victory. Mason Baur started the rally when he was hit by a pitch and then moved to third on a double by Noah Suiter.
Jason Jarrell finished the game off with a single in the gap in left to score both Baur and Suiter. Suiter finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Jarrell also added a pair of hits in the win to help pace the offense.
Baur earned the start and battled back after the Mustangs scored three runs in the first inning. Baur scattered four hits and stuck out two before Austin Dill pitched the final two innings. Dill kept Mount Mercy scoreless and hitless adding a pair of strikeouts in his second win of the season.
The second game saw Evangel out-hit Mount Mercy again 9-6, however, the Crusaders left nine runners on base missing multiple scoring opportunities.
Blake Willenborg earned the win for Mount Mercy going four innings before Matt Trouten pitched the final three innings. Willenborg and Trouten totaled 12 strikeouts on the mound for the Mustangs.
Evangel will earn some rest before a scheduled road trip against North Division teams Friday and Saturday. The Crusaders head to William Penn followed by a trip to Grand View.
