Evangel Baseball Completes Comeback Against No.16 Central Methodist

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team saw itself down early but was able to complete the comeback to get the upset victory over (16) Central Methodist in game one of the three-game series.

Crusaders starting pitcher Brett Hoffman gave up a two run home run to three-hole hitter Sergio Macias in the top of the first to put Evangel in an early hole. He was able to regroup and get out of the inning without further damage.

The Crusaders were able to scratch a run out in the bottom of the second after a Jose Vargas leadoff double. Then Noah Suiter bunted him over to third. Preston Allmand was able to score Vargas and reach first himself after and E1.

In the bottom of the third, Evangel scored three to take a 4-2 lead after a Harrison Stevens single, Jordan Yates RBI double, Mason Baur double, and then a 2 RBI single from Suiter.

The Eagles would get a run back in the top of the fifth to get within one, and then tie the game in the top of the seventh. However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Crusaders scored two more runs to take the lead for good at 6-4. Pinch hitter Harold Alvarez led off the inning with a double, Patrick Gaul had an RBI single, and Baur had an RBI double.

Yates, Baur (2), Vargas, and Alvarez all hit doubles and Gaul hit a triple in the win.

Brett Hoffman was the starter for the Crusaders and he lasted 6.0 innings, giving up three runs off nine hits, with four strikeouts and two walks.

Levi Loughridge pitched 3.0 innings for the Crusaders and got the win. He gave up one run off one hit, with three strikeouts and two walks.

St. George's is providing donuts for the team for another sweet win over a nationally ranked opponent.

Evangel will play a doubleheader against Central Methodist tomorrow starting at noon at Crusader Field.
