SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team came up short in what turned into a slugfest Tuesday afternoon falling 12-10 to Baker in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The Crusaders fell behind early again Tuesday in the series finale as Baker scored a run in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. However, neither run was earned and Evangel rallied for a pair of runs in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Evangel nearly matched the Wildcats as the Crusaders used a big seventh inning to tie the game at 9-9, while Baker scored in every inning but the first and second to mount its lead.
Baker scored a run in the eighth, but it was two insurance runs in the top of the ninth that helped seal the win. Evangel scored a run when Stephen Belcher scored on a wild pitch after pinch running for Rafael Rodriguez who followed Preston Allmand with a single of his own.
Patrick Gaul led the Evangel charge going 3 for 6 with four RBIs while Rodriguez was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Gaul was joined by Harrison Stevens and Jose Vargas with the only extra base hits for the Crusaders who pounded out 13 hits as a team.
The Crusaders used five pitchers as starter Ben Loge scattered 11 hits over 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Zach Johnston, Levi Loughridge, and Mason Baur pitched the middle innings before Austin Dill got the final outs with a pair of strikeouts.
Evangel continues home action with a weekend series against Missouri Valley on Friday and Saturday. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
