SEWARD, Neb. – Down to the wire in the season opener, the Evangel men's basketball team fell 74-70 to Midland University Friday afternoon at the 18th Annual Cattle Classic.
The Crusaders took the lead with 2:41 left in the game after Justin Washington made a pair of free throws. However, a bucket in the lane with 1:30 left in the game gave Midland a 67-66 lead it would not relinquish.
Evangel was forced to foul down the stretch and missed two key shots as the Warriors' Darrin Clark made five of his final six free throws to give Midland its second win of the season.
An early first-half lead slipped away from the Crusaders as Midland took a 45-41 lead into halftime. The Warriors also outrebounded Evangel 23-12. However, a tough second half saw Evangel hang with a solid Midland team that advanced to the NAIA National Tournament a year ago.
The Crusaders struggled from the free throw line shooting 56 percent on 13-of-23. Midland shot 73 percent from the line and 42 percent from the field in the game.
Midland was led by Nick Wood who scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 12 boards in the win.
Evangel closes action at the Cattle Classic on Saturday against host Concordia. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
