Evangel Men’s Basketball Goes Cold in Second Half Loss at Avila

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An early lead slipped away Wednesday night for the Evangel men's basketball team falling, 80-65, to Avila in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

The Crusaders raced out to an early lead starting the game on a 20-3 run. Evangel took a 42-31 lead into the locker room at halftime after shooting 46 percent in the first half.

However, Evangel cooled off and the Eagles got hot in the second half.

The Eagles shot 54 percent from the field as Evangel shot just 33 percent in the second half. The Crusaders also failed to go to the free throw line in the second half after 9-of-12 from the stripe in the first half.

Luke Call led Evangel with 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting from behind the three-point arc. All 19 points came in the first half.

Dylan Bekemeier added 15 points and eight assists as Jalen Norman added four points, eight rebounds, and nine assists.

Tevin Taylor posted a game-high 20 points for the Eagles, knocking down four of the nine three-pointers for Avila.

Evangel returns to Springfield on Saturday to host Central Methodist in Heart action. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
