SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Ten three-pointers weren't enough for the Evangel men's basketball team as they fell to the visiting Avila Eagles 90-76 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The first half saw a total of eight lead changes as neither team was able to gather more than a five-point lead. Evangel knocked down five three-pointers in the first half on 50 percent shooting also shooting efficiently at 52 percent.
However, the Eagles were able to keep pace as they shot 59 percent from the floor and 46 percent from beyond the arc in the first half. Evangel managed to pull close trailing 36-38 at intermission.
The second half was controlled by Avila who came out of halftime on fire. Improving on its shooting percentage, the Eagles shot 65 percent from the floor on 29 second-half shots. Evangel was able to knock down another five three-pointers in the second half, but it wouldn't be enough as Avila would go on a 14-5 run, ultimately denying any chance at a Crusader comeback.
Evangel's Justin Washington finished with another double-double, notching 29 points and 15 rebounds. Washington was the only Crusader in double figures finishing 12-of-14 from the free throw line.
The Eagles had five players finish in double digits in scoring to go along with 25 team assists. Shadon Boone led the team with 26 points.
The Crusaders play host to conference opponent Culver-Stockton Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
