SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A valiant second-half comeback fell just short Saturday for the Evangel men's basketball team, falling, 104-101, to Mount Mercy in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
After trailing 59-48 at halftime the Crusaders rallied back in the second half knocking down seven three-pointers.
Free throws from Clark Brewington with five seconds left pulled Evangel within two, 101-100. Evangel had trailed by as many as 18 points after slowly chipping away at the Mount Mercy lead.
Evangel would foul the Mustangs' Antwain Strong who went 1-of-2 at the line with three seconds left. The Mustangs elected to foul Evangel leading by three, 103-100, sending Dylan Bekemeier to the line.
Bekemeier would miss the second but Evangel was unable to grab the rebound and forced to foul with 1.8 seconds left. The Mustangs missed both free throws but a long rebound was pulled down by Mount Mercy with 1.0 left on the clock.
Mohammed Albagami made 1 of 2 as Evangel's inbounds pass with 1.0 second left was intercepted putting a final stamp on the Crusader comeback.
Evangel was led by 19 points from Brewington who was 5-of-7 from behind the arc, as a trio of underclassmen helped lead the comeback on Senior Day. Luke Call added 17 points and Isaac Blakeslee finished with10 points and five assists.
Mount Mercy was led by Marquice Jones who scored a game-high 23 points off the bench and 22 points from Strong.
Evangel closes its regular season home action Wednesday against Baker. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
