KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Evangel men's basketball team will open the 2018-19 season in unfamiliar territory with the release of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Preseason Poll.

The Crusaders were picked to finish at the bottom of the league following a disappointing 8-23 season a year ago. As Evangel enters the season health will play a key role with four seniors returning from last year's squad with Braden Adams, Luke Call, Chandler Lyon, and Jacob Smith ready for their final season.

Three-time defending league champion William Penn earned the top spot as voted on by the league coaches earning all 12 possible first-place votes as coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team.  Central Methodist earned one first-place vote and was tabbed second in the poll followed by MidAmerica Nazarene and Peru State, with Grand View rounding out the top five.

Evangel opens the season next Tuesday, October 30, in exhibition action at Missouri State at 7 p.m. The regular season for the Crusaders tips off in Columbia, Mo., at the Coaches vs Cancer Tournament, Friday, Nov. 2, hosted by Columbia College.
