COLUMBIA, Mo. – A second-half rally saw the Evangel men's basketball team knock off William Woods Saturday afternoon, 81-75, in non-conference action at the Cougars vs. Cancer Tournament.
Four of the five Evangel starters finished in double figures as Clark Brewington and Cade Coffman finished with 28 and 22 points each in the win. Coffman recorded his first collegiate double-double adding 13 rebounds to help the Crusaders out-rebound the Owls, 45-32.
After trailing by 14 in the first half, Evangel cut the William Woods lead to 10, 43-33 at halftime when Jaylen Jones knocked down 1 of 11 three-pointers for the Crusaders. Jones was 4-of-5 behind the arc to finish with 12 points individually.
However, with 13:23 left in the game Brewington knocked down a three-pointer to start a 10-0 run for Evangel. Twenty-three of Brewington's 28 points came in the second half as he was 4-of-4 from behind the three-point line in the second half.
Brewington hit a three just four minutes later to for the fifth tie of the game at 62-62 with 8:52 left followed by another trey at the 8:38 mark to put Evangel ahead for good.
The Crusaders would not trail the rest of the game as Coffman hit a bucket with 6:55 to grow Evangel's lead to 70-62, the largest of the night.
Pavel Antonov added 10 points and seven rebounds, as Jones added four assists in the win.
David Johnson Jr. led William Woods with 22 points and 12 boards for a double-double.
Evangel opens home action Tuesday night at the Ashcroft Center in the Rib Crib Highway 65 Shootout against College of the Ozarks. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
