SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Back and forth, two rivals went with nine lead changes and eight ties, before College of the Ozarks managed to hold off the Evangel men's basketball, 78-72, Tuesday night in the first meeting of the Rib Crib Highway 65 Shootout.
The Crusaders and Bobcats went tied into halftime 36-36 before starting the second half with an 8-2 run. Evangel battled back after a pair of free throws from Autry Acord with 13:01 cut the CofO lead to one.
Tory Stamps would follow with a runner at the 12:30 mark to give Evangel a brief 51-50 lead. However, the Bobcats would answer back with an 11-0 run over the next five minutes before Clark Brewington stopped the run.
Brewington finished with nine points, nine boards and five assists as Evangel struggled from distance going 9 of 26 beyond the three-point line. However, the Crusaders were unable to match the Bobcats at the free throw line shooting just 9 of 12, while CofO went 18 of 22 from the stripe.
Ethan Davidson and Brandt Cochran led all scorers with 20 points as Davidson finished with a double-double adding 10 boards.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday, December 4, in Point Lookout, Missouri.
Evangel continues non-conference action at home on Saturday against Missouri Baptist. Tipoff from the Ashcroft Center is scheduled for 4 p.m.
