SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A wire to wire finish saw the Evangel men's basketball team's upset bid of No. 11 Central Methodist fall just short Tuesday night 68-66 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The game went back and forth with 12 ties and 14 lead changes. However, the Crusaders could never pull away from the Eagles. After a late foul saw Central Methodist tie the game with 33 seconds left before taking a one-point lead on the second free throw.
Evangel would get an open three-point look with seven seconds left from Clark Brewington that would rim out causing the Crusaders to foul. Central Methodist would go just 1-of-2 at the line to lead by two with 5.1 seconds left giving Evangel one last attempt for a tie or the win.
However, on the dribble drive the ball bounced off a player's heel as Jacob Smith gathered the ball as time expired and Evangel was unable to get a shot off.
Brewington led Evangel with a game-high 22 points and pulled down six rebound as Pavel Anotonov added 14 points and six boards.
Evangel also edged the Eagles in the rebound margin 41-39, however, CMU managed to get to the free throw line 20 more times than the Crusaders. CMU was 18 of 25 while Evangel went just 5 of 9 from the stripe.
Central Methodist was led by 14 points each from Josh Robinson and Erick Locke.
