First Half Lead Slips Away from Evangel Men’s Basketball in Loss to Peru State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel men's basketball team was unable to hold a first-half lead Saturday falling 86-63 to Peru State in Heart of America action.

The Crusaders went back and forth with the Bobcats lead much of the first half. Peru State rallied to take a 37-34 lead at intermission and never looked back. The Bobcats opened the second half on a 10-2 run to extend its lead before Evangel could stop the visitors run.

Cade Coffman led a trio of freshmen that finished in double figures scoring 20 points and pulling down eight boards. Ike Egwu added 12 points while Edriel Martinborough chipped in 10 points and four assists.

Evangel lost the rebounding battle 54-33 and struggled at the free throw line going just 13 for 25. Defensively, Evangel forced 16 turnovers on six steals.

Peru State got 16 points each from Terry Moore and Isaac Simpson, while Lyle Hexom posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Evangel heads south for the second meeting in the Rib Crib Highway 65 Shootout at College of the Ozarks. The Crusaders and Bobcats are set to tip off at 7 p.m.
