SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel men's basketball team continued its inspired play Saturday scaring the 2nd-ranked team in NAIA William Penn in an 89-87 loss at the Ashcroft Center.

The Crusaders erased a 24-point deficit for the second consecutive game pulling within two points in the final 10 seconds.

After a foul by William Penn sent Chris Stocks to the free throw line trailing by three with six seconds left in the game. Evangel would steal the ensuing inbounds pass at half court and call a timeout with 2.5 seconds left in the game.

The Crusaders would get two shots in the final 2.5 seconds after a jump ball was called on a tied possession on the first entry pass. The second inbounds pass on the Evangel baseline was tipped away as time expired and the Crusaders were unable to get a shot off.

AJ Green drilled a three-pointer with 5:52 left in the game to cut the William Penn lead under 10 for the second time in the half. Green scored 11 points in his first action of the season, with a ferocious putback dunk with 2:15 left in the game pulling Evangel within 86-82.

Cade Coffman helped Evangel claw back in the game at the eight-minute mark when he splashed a three-pointer home to bring the Crusaders within 73-68. Coffman scored a season-high 30 points and pulled down seven boards in the loss.

Ike Egwu and Chris Stocks finished with 15 points and 19 points respectively as Egwu as corralled six rebounds.  

William Penn edged Evangel at the free throw line shooting 82 percent as the Crusaders shot 74 percent. The Statesmen were led by 30 points from Abrian Edwards in the win.

Evangel continues its homestand with a rematch against Baker on Thursday. Tipoff from the Ashcroft Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
