PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — A last-second effort was not in the cards Saturday afternoon as the Evangel men's basketball fell short 88-85 at Trinity Christian in the season opener.
The Crusaders and Trinity Christian went back and forth as the home team managed to edge Evangel in part thanks to 12 three-pointers. Evangel went just 5 of 16 from behind the arc.
Edriel Martinborough helped Evangel close the game in the final three minutes scoring the Crusaders' final 10 points. Martinborough got a lay in to go with four seconds to pull the Crusaders within 87-85.
An immediate foul saw Trinity Christian go just 1 of 2 from the free-throw line as Evangel got one final chance with three seconds left. However, a turnover cost the Crusaders a chance at a final shot falling 88-85.
Martinborough scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the second half while adding five assist and five rebounds.
Evangel forced 19 turnovers and shot 50 percent from the field while holding the Trolls to 45 percent shooting.
Trinity Christina saw six players score in double figures, led by James Pennington with 18 points. Josh Shannon added 16 points and 11 rebounds for Trinity Christian as well.
Evangel returns to the Ozarks for the Rib Crib Highway 65 Showdown Tuesday night at College of the Ozarks. Tipoff from Point Lookout, Missouri is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
