ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Evangel men's soccer team was able to outlast Missouri Baptist Wednesday afternoon for a 1-0 victory in the season opener for both teams.

The Crusaders, who have steadily shown improvement since the program started in 2015, took a 0-0 tie into halftime. The win gives head coach John Griffin and the Evangel men's soccer team its first victory over the Spartans after a 6-0 loss last year in Springfield.

The game's only goal came late in the 74th minute as Kyler Moore found Stephen Bates just outside the box. Bates was able to push the ball in for his first collegiate goal helping give Evangel a 1-0 win.

An even match most of the afternoon saw Evangel take a few more opportunities last in the second half. The Crusaders finished with eight shots on goal while Missouri Baptist tallied just five.

Goalkeeper, Josiah Dinwiddie finished with five saves while Samuel Whittington for the Spartans finished with seven.

Evangel returns home Friday for its home opener against LSU-Alexandria in a men's and women's doubleheader. First touch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
