KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the 11th consecutive season Evangel, men's cross country will be represented at the NAIA National Championships as Shane Burns and Duncan Gakuru were named qualifiers on Wednesday.
Sophomore Shane Burns was named a qualifier for the second consecutive year, while transfer junior, Duncan Gakuru earns his first trip to the national championships. In addition to being the 11th consecutive year for at least one Evangel qualifier, it's the first time since 2011, the Crusaders will have multiple runners at the championships.
The men's 8K race will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
A native of Strafford, Mo., Burns raced to a sixth-place finish at the Heart Championships last weekend, while Gakuru finished fifth. Gakuru raced to the second fastest time in Evangel history on Oct. 20 at the NAIA Mid-States Classic with a time of 25:34.8.
Burns is making his second consecutive trip to the national championships after earning a spot in the race last year as a freshman. He was eighth among freshman finishers last season and 61st overall while recording the fastest time for an Evangel runner since 2011.
