Springfield, Mo. – Evangel swept Cardinal Stritch (Wisc.) in a doubleheader Saturday at the Cooper Sports Complex winning 4-2 in the first game and 5-3 in the second game.
Evangel won game one after building a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Crusaders got a run on an RBI double by Kasie Zukow that was followed by a two-run home run by Kiara Carrier. Evangel got an insurance run on a solo homer in the sixth by Rebel Robinson and the Crusaders hung on as Cardinal Stritch out-hit Evangel 11-4 but stranded 12 runners in the loss.
The Crusaders completed the sweep winning the second game 5-3. Evangel scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the second. Cassidy Gillihan went 3 for 4 at the plate for Evangel adding a run scored and a stolen base. The Wolves pulled within a run of the lead in the fifth inning but Evangel responded to take a two-run lead in the sixth on an RBI by single by Carrier.
Evangel improved to 5-4 while Cardinal Stritch dropped to 17-5. The doubleheader were the only two games that could be completed after the rest of the David Fillmore Memorial Tournament was canceled by rain.
The Crusaders return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Arkansas to play Williams Baptist (Ark.) and Central Baptist (Ark.).
