Softball sweeps Ecclesia on final day of the regular season

Atchison, Kan.  – Evangel finished the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Ecclesia (Ark.) on senior day with two five-inning wins both of which were 9-1 scores. 

The Crusaders banged out 13 hits in four innings led by Caitlin BuckalewKasie Zukow, and Brittany Hoskins with two hits each.  Zukow drove in two runs and hit a triple for Evangel and Hoskins also hit a triple.  Evangel starter Michaela Tolliver went three innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out two. 

Evangel continued the offense onslaught in game two pounding out 14 hits in five innings with Katie LorenzBrittany Arnold, and Cassidy Gillihan all with multi-hit games.  Brittany Hoskins hit a three-run double in Evangel's six-run first inning.  Freshman Caitlin Buckalew scored on a inside the park home run to deep right-center in the second inning.  Freshman Kiara Carrier hit her team leading ninth home run in 4th inning for Evangel.  Senior Desley Jett got the win for Evangel improving to 3-1 on the season. 

Evangel improved to 22-13 and the Royals dropped to 4-27. 

The Crusaders win be in action again Thursday, April 30th when the play in the Heart of America conference tournament at the Blue Valley Complex in Overland Park, Kansas.  Evangel will be either the fourth or fifth seed and and will play Benedictine in the first round.  The schedule and bracket will be announced next week. The tournament champion will earn an automatic berth in the NAIA national tournament.
