BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The Evangel softball team dropped its season-opening double-header Wednesday, 3-4 in game one and 5-4 in game two at Oklahoma Wesleyan in non-conference action.
Game one saw both pitchers with solid outings as Michaela Tolliver carried a 1-hitter through the first three innings. Tolliver earned the loss after scattering six hits and only walking one.
Evangel pushed two runs across in the fourth inning to get on the scoreboard first, although Oklahoma Wesleyan answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Errors allowed runs to score for both teams as the Crusaders took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning.
However, the Eagles answered with another run in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Game two saw Evangel outhit Oklahoma Wesleyan 13-7 as the Crusaders left eight runners on base.
Megan Washam finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Sheppard was 3-for-4 in the second game. One of Sheppard's hits was her first triple of the season in the top of the fourth helping Evangel plate a run after falling behind 5-2.
The Crusaders would add their fourth run in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI single from Washam. However, Eagles pitcher, Makayla Kelly, was able to strand a pair of Evangel runners and pitch around three hits in the sixth and seventh to hold onto a one-run victory.
Kyra Parker was tabbed with the loss as she allowed seven hits and striking out seven. Parker was charged with four runs as she walked just one on 108 pitches.
The Crusaders make their first appearance at home in the 2017 season Friday against nationally ranked No. 9 Morningside. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
