Softball Knocks off No. 9 Morningside in Double-Header Split

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel softball team knocked off 9th-ranked Morningside Friday afternoon 5-2 before falling 13-3 in game one of a non-conference double-header at Crusader Field.

Starting pitcher Kyra Parker earned her first win of the season after striking out eight and only walking one. Parker scattered four hits but was not charged with an earned run in the win.

Evangel jumped out early on the Mustangs with a 3-run first inning with four straight hits before recording an out. The Crusaders pounded out nine hits as Cassidy Gillihan finished 3-for-4 with a RBI while Michelle Sheppard was 2-for-3.

Caitlin Buckalew earned a pair of RBIs with a double in the first inning while also going 1-for-3.

The Crusaders added a run in the fourth and fifth innings which proved to be insurance runs as Morningside pushed across its second run in the top of the sixth. However, Parker helped shut down the Mustangs with a perfect seventh with two of her eight strikeouts coming in the inning.

Game one saw Morningside jump out to an early 6-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Evangel answered with two runs in the bottom of the first but was held scoreless over the next three innings as the Rachel Henks struck out seven and walked none for the Mustangs.

Buckalew belted a solo home run for her first of the season as Evangel was held to six hits. Megan Washam was the only Crusader to record multiple hits in game one going 2-for-2 with a RBI.

Michaela Tolliver was handed the loss after going 4.1 innings and allowing 11 runs. Taylor Kister pitched the final 0.2 innings as Morningside added four runs in the top of the fifth inning, putting the run rule into effect.

Evangel pushed one run across the plate in the bottom of the fifth but was held at bay falling in the opener.

Morningside had entered the double-header at 5-0 and only allowed one run in five games.

Up Next
The Crusaders will host the Evangel Fayetteville Classic next weekend in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Friday action will see the Crusaders take on Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) before matching up against Friends University. On Saturday Evangel will take on Oklahoma City University and Central Baptist to close out tournament action.
