ST. LOUIS – The Evangel softball team split a double-header Wednesday afternoon at Missouri Baptist falling in game one, 2-0, before a run-rule victory in game two, 16-0, in non-conference action.
The Crusaders lost a pitcher's duel in game one as Michaela Tolliver allowed just four hits over six innings. However, Missouri Baptist was able to add a two-out run in the bottom of the first inning before scoring another run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Evangel was held to just one hit as the Spartans pitcher, Andrea Chessor, struck out five and walked none. Both teams committed two errors in the opener, while Megan Washam earned the only hit for the Crusaders in the loss.
The second game saw Evangel's bats explode with 19 hits to finish off a 16-0 win in five innings.
The Crusaders blew the game open with nine runs on eight hits and three errors in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back-to-back hits from Lauren Chambers, Taylor Kister and Jackie Hoffmeier aided in the big inning for Evangel that started with a 3-RBI double from Chambers.
Both Chambers and Kister finished with three hits as Chambers tallied four RBI in the game. Washam also added three RBI for Evangel in the win.
Kyra Parker faced just three batters over the minimum as she tossed a two-hitter. Parker shutout the Spartans for her fifth complete game of the season and first shutout after striking out four and walking none.
Evangel returns home Friday and Saturday to open Heart of America action. Friday the Crusaders will host Missouri Valley before a double-header against No. 20 Central Missouri on Saturday. First pitch both days are set for 1 p.m.
