Softball Swings Past Peru State in Sweep

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The offense for the Evangel softball team came alive Saturday taking an 8-4 win and an 11-1 run-rule victory over Peru State in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

The Crusaders extended their winning streak to nine consecutive games with the sweep. Evangel also has built a three-game lead in the Heart South Division sitting at 12-2 in league play and followed by Central Methodist at 7-3 who also still sit on the Crusaders schedule twice.

Game one bounced back and forth with Peru State scoring a run in each of the first four innings. However, Evangel was too much scoring two runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings to close out the victory.

Taylor Kister belted her first home run of the season and Kiara Carrier, Megan Washam and Cassidy Gillihan all recorded extra base hits. Carrier hit three doubles to finish 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs, while Gillihan was also 3-for-4.

Michaela Tolliver won her seventh game of the season and fourth straight, as she was able to work around nine Bobcat hits.

In the second game, Evangel busted out with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Crusaders batted around scoring with nine hits and two errors in the inning that included a two-run homer from Lauren Chambers. Chambers finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.

The Crusaders would add a run in the second and third before Peru State got on the scoreboard in the fourth with an unearned run. Megan Washam, Kister and Carrier and tallied extra-base hits in the second game with Carrier adding three RBIs and Kister earning two more.

Kyra Parker got to double-digit wins to improve to 10-3 on the season after allowing just two hits in five innings. Parker also recorded four strikeouts and one walk.

Evangel returns to the road next Friday and Saturday with Heart action at William Penn and Grand View. First pitch on Friday against William Penn is scheduled for 2 p.m.
