CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Evangel softball team earned a split after a 6-0 shutout in game one, before falling in the bottom of the seventh in game two, 4-3, at Mount Mercy Monday afternoon in conference action.
The Crusaders, who are on the tail end of a five-day road trip through Iowa, reached the 20-win mark with the game one victory. Evangel posted its sixth shutout of the season behind Michaela Tolliver's three-hit effort in the circle.
Tolliver won her ninth game of the season to move just one win shy of third all-time in Evangel history. Amy Hiatte won 47 games from 1999-02 and sits in third, as Wendy Niebuhr holds the record with 58 wins from 2002-05. The senior pitcher walked just one and struck out five in the complete game.
Michelle Sheppard finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored as Evangel out-hit Mount Mercy 6-0. Sheppard also stole two bases to move into the top 10 for stolen bases in a single-season with 20, tying Bobbie Sue Harris (1996) in ninth.
In the nightcap, Evangel rallied back to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning before a two-out double from Kourtney Medina gave Mount Mercy a walk-off victory.
Evangel again out-hit the Mustangs 12-4 but left nine runners on base in the loss. Cassidy Gillihan led the Crusaders going 3-for-4 at the plate while Sheppard, Kiara Carrier, Lauren Chambers and Caty Eby all recorded multiple hits.
Kyra Parker lost her second straight as she walked two and struck out two. Parker allowed four runs on just four hits as only three of the runs for the Mustangs were earned.
Evangel finishes its road trip Tuesday at Graceland. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
