SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel softball team stumbled against Benedictine Saturday falling 11-6 and 7-1 in Heart South Division action.
A late rally fell short as Benedictine added three late runs in the top of the seventh to pull away for an 11-6 win.
Evangel pulled within a run 3-2 in the third inning with RBI singles from Michelle Sheppard and Kami Holt. However, the Ravens added three more runs in the fourth and two again in the fifth innings to lead 8-2.
The Crusaders rallied again to pull within 8-5 after an RBI single from Arlena Armstrong scored Taylor Good and Lauren Chambers. Armstrong finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs as Evangel finished with 11 hits in the game.
Bridget Rippe fell to 0-2 with the loss as she tossed 4.2 innings and struck out four with no walks.
The bats continued to struggle for the young Crusaders as the Ravens out-hit Evangel, 10-4. Freshman Ashlie Marshall recorded two of the Evangel hits going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
After Benedictine took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, Lauren Chambers scored Marshall with an RBI single to pull within a run. However, it would be the only run for Evangel as they left seven runners on base.
Benedictine added two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull away.
Abby Emmitt was solid in the circle going the distance as she walked just one and struck out eight. She cruised through the first three innings without allowing a hit before giving up three in the fourth.
Evangel continues its home stretch Tuesday against MidAmerica Nazarene. First pitch of the Heart double-header is scheduled for 2 p.m.
