SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel earn split against Avila with a walk-off win in game two, 7-4, after a 3-0 setback in game one.
The Evangel offense was held at bay in game one as Avila shutout the Crusaders 3-0.
Bridget Rippe went five innings and scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs. She struck out two and walked none despite earning the loss. Taylor Kister pitched the final two innings of relief for the Crusaders.
Michelle Sheppard provided the heroics for Evangel in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off home run. Sheppard belted a 3-run homer over the left field fence to give the Crusaders a 7-4 win over Avila.
Evangel took a 2-0 lead before a home run from Avila tied the game in the third inning. The Eagles had taken a brief 3-2 lead but the Crusaders scored a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game back up.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Alex Jackson belted an RBI single to give Evangel back a 4-3 lead. However, Avila hit a home run in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings as the Crusaders earned the walk-off victory.
Abby Emmitt earned a no-decision after scattering eight hits over six innings and striking out three. Taylor Kister picked up the win after going 1.2 innings of no-hit softball while adding two strikeouts.
Evangel is scheduled for a pair of road double-headers Friday at Missouri Valley and Saturday at Culver-Stockton.
