CANTON, Mo. – The Evangel softball team split a road double-header Saturday at Culver-Stockton winning game one 8-7, before falling 9-8 in game two.
Evangel held off a late rally from Culver-Stockton to take an 8-7 win over the Wildcats in game one. Both teams combined for 27 hits and 15 runs as the Crusaders scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.
Evangel added a run in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 8-6 as the Wildcats was only able to score one in the bottom of the seventh.
Michelle Sheppard and Ashlie Marshall led Evangel at the plate as Sheppard finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a double. Marshall added three hits and a run scored in the win, while Arlena Armstrong scored twice.
A seventh-inning rally for Culver-Stockton pushed the Wildcats past Evangel in a 9-8 setback.
Evangel built a 7-3 lead after a five-run fourth inning. However, after adding a run in the sixth inning, Culver-Stockton answered with three runs in the sixth and walked-off with three more runs in the seventh.
Abby Emmitt went 5.1 innings and struck out a season-high 11 as she earned a no-decision. Taylor Kister pitched the final 1.1 innings and was charged with the loss allowing four hits and three unearned runs.
Evangel continues its road swing Tuesday and Wednesday at Baker and MidAmerica Nazarene. First pitch on Tuesday against the Wildcats is scheduled for 4 p.m.
