SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel softball team held off a late rally Friday afternoon to earn a split against No. 17 Grand View, 5-4, after falling 6-2 in game one.
The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning but Grand View answered with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth innings.
The Evangel offense was held in check by Claudia Farrell who allowed just three hits and struck out 11 for her 23rd win of the season. Bridget Rippe earned the loss for the Crusaders going five innings and scattering 11 hits with one strikeout.
Arlena Armstrong earned one of the three hits for Evangel and the only extra-base hit, a double in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Crusaders added a run in the final inning thanks to a Viking error but stranded Armstrong in the loss.
Evangel was able to hang on to an early lead to knock off 17th-ranked Grand View and stay in the hunt for one of the final spots in next week's conference tournament.
The Crusaders took advantage of an early Grand View error in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. After the Vikings tied the game in the second, Evangel scored three runs on three hits and an error to take a 4-1 lead.
Abby Emmitt picked up the win scattering 10 hits in a complete game effort with five strikeouts.
Evangel finishes the regular season Saturday against William Penn for Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The win over a ranked opponent is sponsored by St. George's Donuts.
