SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Evangel softball team jumped out to a 10-2 run-rule win against Culver-Stockton before ending with a split after a 7-3 loss in the second game on Friday afternoon.
The first game saw the Evangel offense explode for seven of its 10 runs in the second inning.
Jenna Halbrook started the scoring as she cleared the bases with a triple to give the Crusaders an early 3-0 lead. After an RBI single from Ashlie Marshall to score Halbrook, Ali Raley would belt a 3-RBI double to make it 7-0.
The Crusaders would add two more runs in the third and the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth inning to force the run-rule victory.
Bridget Rippe was solid after allowing two unearned runs in the first, she settled down to allow just one hit through the final four innings. Rippe struck out six and walked just one to improve to 4-2 on the season.
AJ Carpenter went 4 for 4 with three RBI and a run scored to pace the offense. Michelle Sheppard and Halbrook also added a pair of hits as Sheppard scored three times and Halbrook finished with three RBI.
Evangel was unable to match the timely hits with Culver-Stockton in the second as the Wildcats out-hit the Crusaders 10-8 in the 7-3 setback.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the third inning but Evangel answered with a run in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1. However, the Wildcats added another run in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning to hold a 7-1 advantage.
The Crusaders rallied in the seventh with a pair of runs but left a runner on when the final out was recorded.
Emma Hill scattered nine hits over 4.2 innings before Abby Emmitt pitched the final 2.1 innings. Emmitt allowed just one hit while holding the Wildcats scoreless.
Evangel continues weekend action on Saturday at home against William Penn. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
