Evangel Softball Upsets No. 17 Baker for Win 100 for Halbrook

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. -- The Evangel softball team held off 17th-ranked Baker 4-3 to help propel head coach Jay Halbrook to his 100th win at Evangel after falling in game one.

Game 1

Evangel saw a six-run second inning prove to be too much to overcome as Baker held on for a 9-0 run-rule victory.

Evangel saw its first of three hits against the all-American pitcher from Baker in the third inning when Jenna Halbrook singled. She was caught stealing to end the inning as the Crusaders came up empty on the scoreboard.

Michelle Sheppard and Ali Raley also singled at the plate for Evangel.

Bridget Rippe went two innings before Josie Allcock pitched the final two innings. Rippe scattered eight hits but was charged with just four runs.

Game 2

Evangel scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings to build a 4-0 lead. Anah Noble and Hailey Lange tallied the RBIs to help the Crusaders take the lead.

The scoring started with an RBI single from Lange in the top of the first inning. Lange scored Sheppard and Noble to lead 2-0.

Noble singled home Halbrook and Allcock who led off the inning a base hit and a double in the second. Allison Davis and Josie Allcock also added two hits each in the upset win.

Abby Emmitt got the win going seven innings and scattering seven hits by the Wildcats. She allowed just three runs including leaving a runner stranded in the bottom of the seventh.

Evangel makes a quick return home to host Benedictine Saturday in Heart South Division action. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
