COLUMBIA, Mo. – A hot shooting start helped the Evangel women's basketball team to a 77-63 opening night win at Stephens College Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams.
The Crusaders start the season 1-0 while the Stars open at 1-1 after a quick start by Evangel on Wednesday. Opening the game on a 15-2 run, Evangel all but put the game away early.
Four Crusaders knocked down three-pointers in the opening minutes as Randi Hancock and Kylee Moore helped lead the way to start. Moore came off the bench to finish with 15 points as foul trouble hurt Evangel in the second half.
Evangel built a 38-24 halftime lead after shooting 71 percent from the field in the first half. Overall the Crusaders were 10-for-21 from behind the three-point line as Alison Jarrell led the way with five three-pointers to finish with 17 points.
In the second half, Paige Patterson scored 14 of her game-high 18 points to help hold off a late rally by the Stars. Patterson added eight boards after going 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Sydnee Garrett helped on the boards pulling down 12 rebounds while adding eight points in her Evangel debut. Garrett's presence on the glass helped Evangel outscore Stephens, 19-4 in second-chance points.
Stephens was led by Chalee Britt who scored a game-high 21 points. Makenzie Jemes added 18 points for the Stars in the loss.
Evangel heads south on Highway 65 next Tuesday to renew the women's side of the Rib Crib Highway 65 Shootout at College of the Ozarks. Tipoff from Point Lookout is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
