SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel women's basketball continued its hot start Monday night with an 80-59 win over Missouri Baptist in non-conference action.
The Crusaders improve to 4-0 on the season under first-year head coach Megan Leuzinger, the best start since the 2009-10 season when Evangel finished 23-10.
On Monday, Evangel managed to get out and put pressure on the Spartans who fell to 1-3 on the year. The Crusaders also took advantage of a Missouri Baptist press that led to layups on the offensive end and a 49 percent shooting percentage.
Evangel opened up a 25-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as Missouri Baptist got as close as eight in the second quarter. The Crusaders led 42-30 at halftime but pushed their lead to 22 in the third quarter with Brianna Vogts finished along the baseline with 2:49 left in the quarter to put the Crusaders up 61-39.
Vogts came off the bench to score 16 points and pull in six boards for Evangel, while Sydnee Garrett scored 20 and added eight rebounds.
Lexie Vaught chipped in 13 points with seven coming from the free throw line where she helped Evangel finish 15 of 16 in the win. Vaught added eight boards while Kylee Moore added 12 points and seven assists.
Missouri Baptist turned the ball over 17 times and shot just 33 percent from the field. Alissa Rowden led the Spartans with 14 points.
Evangel continues a busy week heading to NAIA newcomer Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
